Counter Culture

Rating: 2

We ate dinner here in March 2023.

Chicken burger and chips
Macaroni cheese
Fried chicken gravy fries

We were pleased to see that Counter Culture read our review from two years ago, and has removed both of the items we didn’t like from the menu. In a cruel twist of fate, the new menu didn’t fare any better. In fact, the burger was worse. The bun wasn’t a bun, it was a section of ciabatta loaf. Wow. So dry, so chewy, so bready, so bad. Impossible to eat, way too tall, initial mouthfuls were bread only. It was clear the person who invented this burger was more concerned about appearance on the ‘gram than flavour in the hand.

The macaroni cheese was serviceable but kind of bland. They offered add ons, but the base meal should be able to stand alone, you shouldn’t have to pay extra to get something that tastes good. The gravy fries were the highlight. While the chips were a little soggy, the gravy was flavourful and plentiful, welcomely full of mushrooms, and despite first appearances had a good ratio of gravy to fries. The chicken was nice enough, but we wouldn’t go out of our way for it.
