Caribe coffee is a roastery cafe with an interesting, Caribbean forward menu. The food looked pretty good with multiple options that seemed worth going back to. It’s bigger than it looks too, with a extra seating area out the back (which is also where they are hiding the water, by the way). Out of the gate we started strong. The reuben was very satisfying, well constructed, flavourful, had plenty of filling without being silly, and we were excited. Then the burrito happened. With the Caribbean influences we thought we were in for a taste sensation. It also contained rice and beans, adding further fuel to the “ooh see it’s Caribbean yum yum” fire. What a devastating let down. Most of the flavour came with the accompanying BBQ sauce, which was dip-for-kids-nuggets standard. The pulled pork was very dry and bland. The heating was uneven, with the beans tepid and the rice magma.

You won’t believe what came with the banana loaf. Big ole’ scoop of full on margarine. We’re talking 5kg catering tub here. When it came out we weren’t sure what was happening - was this a luxury whipped butter? It was so soft! We ate some on its own. The Fee-Rex was so confused she tried it a few times, and each time it tasted like absolutely nothing. It was a shame as the loaf itself was decent.

Onto the smoothie. The flavour was good, subtle with real banana and detectable honey. However, it was too thin, and foamy as well. The thinness was exacerbated by serving it with a very fat straw. We don’t usually mention coffee, but as this is a roastery we thought it deserved to be part of the review. Business Andy isn’t a coffee snob, so he won’t speak to notes of that or undertones of this. But it was a good coffee.
