Salty Pidgin

We ate dinner here in August 2026.
Eye fillet with roast potatoes, caramelised onion puree, and rocket
Lamb shoulder pide
Bay leaf and cinnamon creme caramel
Salty Pidgin is a fancy-ish dinner place with cloth napkins and friendly, prompt service. Unfortunately, they don’t know how to cook a steak. That’s a pretty big issue. When it comes to ordering a steak, aside of the quality of the meat (which was excellent), the cook is the main thing you need to get right. Especially for a $50 meal that is a bit on the small side. We ordered a medium steak, but what we got was on the rare side of medium-rare. The other major issue was the potatoes, which were definitely underdone. When we bit that potato, it bit back. We’re not talking rock hard spuds, but it was noticeable.
Luckily, Salty Pidgin does know how to cook a pide. It was bloody good. The lamb shoulder was tender and the other flavours perfectly balanced. We could have done with a steak knife, as our standard knife struggled to deal with the pide crust. Maybe we should have just used the steak knife we got with the eye fillet? Think again. No steak knife was provided for either meal, tsk tsk.
If the review ended here, Salty Pidgin would be cruisin’ for a two-sin’. Luckily we had the space to share a dessert, and we were glad we did. The creme caramel hit all the right notes - great flavour, some interest from the bay leaf, crunchy biscuity bits providing some texture, we were very pleased indeed.
