We ate lunch here in June 2026.
Two chicken burgers
Battered fish
Battered pineapple ring
The following is a true story. Two days ago , waiting for a bus, we were discussing dine in fish and chips shops and why they weren’t a thing. Today, the first place we saw to eat in Newtown was a dine in fish and chip shop that had just opened. Did we manifest this I to existence,? We see no other plausible explanation.
And thank god that we did, because it was really good. The fish was fresh, the batter, light, it came with a slice of lemon, and had just the right amount of salt on it. Likewise the chicken in the chicken burgers was crispy and delicious, perfectly fried, in fact the entire burger package was just right, fresh lettuce, not too much onion, soft buns. And it was real fried chicken, not a composite chicken smush patty like you might expect. And then the pineapple ring, it was absolutely covered in cinnamon and sugar, had a thick crispy batter, and was miraculously not too hot. We wondered, given how new this place is, whether what we were experiencing was the miraculous benefits of new fryer oil? I guess time will tell whether their quality remains high.
Given this glowing praise, we had to ask ourselves whether this was a 4. We decided it wasn’t, for the following reasons, but they weren’t far off. While the sign said “dine in” they hadn’t really gone to much effort to make that a good experience, it was chilly, there was no cutlery, few serviettes, really the only thing they did was put food on a tray instead of wrapping it up in paper. It really wouldn’t have taken much to make dining in a more pleasant experience. The chicken burger had nailed everything it set out to do, but it was conservative in its ambitions. An interesting sauce, a sneaky hash brown slipped in, or some pickle could all have bumped him closer to the top.
