Thai style eggplant with pork

Perhaps it’s partly our fault for trying to have dinner during the peak office-do weeks, but what a schemozzle. They were just not set up for a big table of drunken revellers to be whooping and hollering in the back. The other, much more demure large table beside them was quite upset to be seated beside such a rowdy group, but we had a great time just people watching.

We certainly had a lot of time to fill. Despite all the other tables already being served by the time we had finished ordering, we still had to wait about 30 minutes for our dinner. How are you so slow, especially for Chinese food which is usually lightning quick? Yes, there was an adjoining takeaway wing, but gauged by the level of traffic coming in and out of there it wasn’t particularly busy.

The orange beef, which is Fee-Rex’s favourite, was underwhelming to say the least. There was no orange flavour and the beef pieces were large and super chewy. The eggplant dish was quite interesting. You may think that it would be pieces of fried eggplant, and pieces of fried pork. But you’d be wrong. They had somehow combined the pork and the eggplant together (poking the pieces of pork into the eggplant perhaps?), battered and fried it as one large unit. Then it had been placed in a sauce, which was a bit too sweet and a bit too salty, but the overall effect was surprising and unexpected. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to compensate for the bad beef, long wait and poor ambiance.
