As we gazed about our surrounds at Chipmunks, we saw what was perhaps the most captive audience that has ever existed. The ‘Munk could have been peddling truly abysmal food and they would have still had a steady flow of bored parents and excited children ordering donuts, coffees, and “frogs in ponds” which were criminally overpriced Freddo frogs in cups of green jelly. Fortunately for us, they took the opportunity to aim a little higher than that, and served up a couple of pleasant surprises.

The mocha was genuinely good, a pleasant balance between coffee and sweetness, and not too much of either. The ciabatta that enclosed the burger was excellent, fresh and soft, and perfectly toasted. And the chips were hot and fresh, salted just the amount, and had no nasty old oil flavour. The fish was crisp, although we felt the quality of the actual fish was middling.

The fish and chips came with what was unfortunately just mixed salad leaves out of a bag with an almost insultingly sparse dribble of balsamic reduction over the top, what a trudge finishing this salad was. That same salad mix found its way into the burger too, but overall, the burger was actually pretty good, and was the highlight.
