What a pleasant surprise this place was. We’ve been burned at cafes that look just like this in the past, with the hot and cold cabinets, the trays, the sterile seating area, and the often telling emptiness. Taihape Bakery & Cafe bucks this trend though, with very good food, although the ambiance could stand to be improved.
The steak and pepper pie was just a great pie, great pastry, a lovely meat filling, and a warm peppery flavour that was hot, but not too hot. The potato stuffed sausage did let them down a bit though, had this been a more interesting sausage, and had they seasoned the mash, it could have been a success. And finally the banana and cream pancake was just a fluffy delight. It was full of whipped cream, slices of banana, and a little bit of jam, it really put a smile on Business Andy’s dial.
A bit of a diamond in the rough, this one.
