Kebabs On Queen

Falafel kebab on rice (this is an iskender) Lamb on kumara chips

While it is possible to dine in at Kebabs on Queen, and they don’t frown on it, even providing a bin and disposable cutlery, we wouldn’t say they were encouraging dine in. On a cold Wellington night the double doors were propped wide open, beckoning the steady flow of drunk kebab shufflers. Also, the stools were too short for the bench by the window. The place was staffed by just one depressed guy. While he was getting away with this at the time we went in, it would only take a few more customers before he would be overwhelmed.

The iskender, or kebab on rice as they call it for some reason, was pretty good. The rice was sticky, plenty of sauce, reasonable falafel, and fresh salads in a good ratio. And no godawful big chunks of red onion. The kumara chips aren’t great for meat on chips. It felt like a bit of a novelty, maybe a trap for people who are sick of the usual meat on potato chips. While the kumara chips themselves were pretty good, they have a distinct flavour which just doesn’t work as meat on chips. Regular potato chips would have been better.
