Yum Yum House is your typical westernised Chinese joint. They have dispensed with the chicken feet and jellyfish, but have kept all your fried favourites. The decor was, to put it generously, dated. We’re talking floral embroidered chairs with shiny thread, plastic grapes and valences hanging from the ceiling. It was none too clean either, with the Fee-Rex finding a used serviette on her seat and plenty of rice under the table. Perhaps as a result of this, dine-in was empty and the restaurant was quiet except for the owners child being entertained by the young teenage wait staff.

While the mood in the restaurant wasn’t cheerful, the meals sure were cheap. The orange beef sauce was overly sweet. However, they had done a number of things right. The meat wasn’t gristly, it was well fried, they’d added sesame seeds, the onion and carrot were cut small, and the lettuce was fresh. The three (!) meats that came with the mee goreng weren’t quite the same calibre, but were passable, and didn’t ruin what was otherwise a reasonable dish.
