Joseph Street Kitchen

Rating: 3

We ate lunch here in July 2022.

Feta and blue cheese tart
Calzone with meat
New York cheesecake
Banoffee (banana and coffee) smoothie

The Joseph Street Kitchen, or JSK as the locals say, was a bit frantic. It was being staffed by two stressed out older ladies who informed us they were very short staffed and that only the cabinet menu and eggs were available. Luckily the cabinet was brimming with good-looking choices.

The tart was sensational, light and fluffy, great flavour with enough blue cheese in it to make it blue-cheesy, but still had a nice sharp flavour like the feta too. It was paired with a little grated beetroot salad which went really well with the tart, and a relish too. The ‘calzone with meat’ was poorly named but tasted good. The construction was interesting. JSK offers both a vegetarian and a meat calzone. They’re the same product, with both being stuffed with mushroom and having cheese on top, but the meat one had bacon on top too. Was it really a calzone? It certainly wasn’t pretty, but it definitely got the job done.

The highlight was the New York cheesecake which was a hands down 10/10. The base was a great texture and just the right thickness. The body had a great flavour and texture, silky and delicious. Paired nicely with the side yoghurt too. The banoffee smoothie was a let down. It was more like an average iced coffee. You could barely detect the banana, and the texture was very thin.
