Lone Star

Rating: 1

We ate dinner here in October 2021.

Burrrrrito (beef mince burrito with chilli rice and coleslaw)
Kiwi joker (ribeye steak with onions, chips, eggs, mushrooms, and coleslaw)
Jack Daniel’s chocolate fudge pudding
Snake bite venom teapot (vodka, Galliano, triple sec, Midori, orange juice, and cranberry juice)

Maybe our tastes have changed, but Lone Star isn’t like how we remembered it from 2004. Which, incidentally, is about the last time that teapots were cool. That didn’t stop us, in a fit of nostalgia, from ordering and then instantly regretting the snake bite venom teapot. Although it was reportedly the waitress’s favourite, it was foul. Way too much Galliano, not enough of anything else, and the pulpy orange juice looked chunky and gross in the shot glasses.

We stacked the deck a bit here by ordering two items that had been recommended by a friend, and while they were the two strongest dishes, that isn’t saying much. The steak was pretty reasonable, well cooked and not gristly, but they put the wrong sauce on it, and the coleslaw was just a slog to get through. The burrito was tragic, it had clearly been premade and then reheated based off the lukewarm temperature, soaked-in tomato sauce, and withered tortilla. The rice was incredibly dry and had not a skerrick of flavour to it, and neither did the endless coleslaw. The other recommendation was a very average chocolate pudding, with rock hard ice cream and not enough sauce.

Bookings recommended.
